Dolls and Ceramics: Kikipop and Cat Dish

April 19, 2023 Megann Zabel

Kikipop and a cat dish. I feel like I have a goofy collection of photos.

The second slip-casting mold I ever made was all the little kitties on the cat dish above. I added four cats to a wheel-thrown bowl and painted it with underglaze. Maybe there is a pet cat out there that deserves some pastel cute culture in their life.

The doll pictured is Kikipop. This Kikipop doll is from 2015 and called “Honey Pink.” She is from the first run of Kikipop dolls made in collaboration with Azone. Her body has great construction and it takes very little effort to get her into a cute pose. She is wearing her original wig and Mattel Sanrio clothing.

There are more images of the bowl and doll on my Instagram account.

Dolls and Ceramics: Vintage Skipper and The Bunny Bowl

April 7, 2023 Megann Zabel

A friend commissioned a challenge — a large serving bowl with cute bunnies around the edges. This is a part of my new ceramic series that combines vessels with objects from old slip-casting molds. I also made a Medusa pot in the same fashion. I picked up a couple bunny molds a few months ago and started using them just in time for Easter.

Typically, my ceramic work is pretty small. It was a nervous task to take on a big bowl. The bowl is a slab laid into a plaster mold. I slip-casted six bunnies and attached them to the bowl. After some careful drying of the bunny bowl, I added eyes with underglaze and bisqued the piece. I added a clear glaze and called it good. It’s a tad wobbly, but it is pretty decent for my first large prototype in this series.

The doll pictured is a vintage Skipper in a random bunny costume that, I think, was originally intended for a BJD. She’s wearing Momoko boots.

Dolls and Ceramics: Safari Momoko & Medusa Pot

Momoko Safari Dry Wind and Medusa Pot

In recent years, I have been putting together a small collection of old plaster slip-casting molds for ceramic work. Some of the molds are a bit goofy, like animal and people figurines. I wasn’t sure what to do with them until I came up with a new idea a couple months ago. I planned to use slip-casted figures as feet for wheel-thrown vessels. Think a claw-footed tub, but ceramic bowls ad the tub and figurines as the feet. I am still developing the process and the medusa pot is my first prototype. I am not in love with the manganese glaze, but everything about this project was an experiment.

The figurines are cute little ladies in big dresses holding flowers. I altered the ladies by adding snakes to their heads to make it a medusa pot. I quite enjoyed finding a way to make this slip-casted mold a bit of a new idea.

The dolls pictured are the Sekiguchi Momoko “The Safari of Dry Wind,” including the cold version (blonde). I really love the face screening, but I find it isn’t the easiest to photograph. Parts of it get a bit washed out. They are both wearing their original outfits.

Did you notice the hoya plant in the pot? I’m also a plant enthusiast!

Dolls and Ceramics: Coney Island Poppy Parker & Ugly Cup

March 20, 2023 Megann Zabel

Since I started my ceramics journey about a year and a half ago, it has been hard to figure out what to post on my social media accounts that are doll-centric. Should I post my ceramics work there? I didn’t know. I decided I would try a creative strategy of posting dolls and ceramics together. Welcome to the weird posts dolls and pots. Here we go.

Pictured is the lovely Coney Island Poppy Parker dressed in pieces of the 2013 Integrity Toys Monogram Completist outfit. The cup is the first hand-built cup I made when starting my ceramics journey. I made sure to decorate it with lots of techniques. I lovingly call it my ugly cup. It gets a lot of use as a mount for my phone holder so I can make videos of my work.
